Anyone in the United States who has used Facebook in the last 16 years is now eligible to receive a portion of a $725 million settlement by parent company Meta related to privacy infractions, as long as they file a claim before August 25.

The users who decide to reject the settlement must do so by July 26 at 11:59 p.m. Two more deadlines are also coming up. Pacific time and consumers may also register an objection to the settlement by July 26. People who opt out may wish to retain the option of bringing a separate legal action against Facebook, for example.

The settlement is the result of several lawsuits filed against Facebook by individuals who alleged that the business inappropriately shared personal information with third-party sources such as marketers and data brokers. The lawsuit began when Facebook was caught in a privacy crisis with Cambridge Analytica in 2018, which collected user data from the platform in order to profile voters.

According to a newly constructed class-action website set up to pay out money to the social network's users, Meta denied any obligation or wrongdoing under the settlement.

However, under the terms of the agreement, US citizens who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, are qualified to make a financial claim, provided they do so before August 23, this year.
