Checking your baggage allowance

We cannot accept any luggage that exceeds the maximum weight of 32 kg/70 lb and 203 cm/80 inches in total dimension. The total dimension of your bag is the sum of its width, height and length.

Please also see the maximum dimensions allowed for standard luggage.

Items exceeding the agreed size must be repackaged in split units, otherwise they will not be accepted on the flight. To avoid disappointment, please contact our Customer Service at least three business days before you fly if your suitcase is too large or overweight.

Special arrangements can be made for sports equipment, musical instruments, pet travel, mobility aids, medical equipment, and diplomatic luggage.

Take a look at the table below to see which areas your flight covers. You can then calculate how much the additional baggage charge will be per piece and, if applicable, the additional charges for each oversized or heavy piece.

This applies to each bag that exceeds the weight allowance for your flight class, but does not exceed 32 kg/70 lb.

For luggage over 32 kg/70 lb, you can expect to pay four times the additional baggage fee per piece. Please contact Customer Service for further details and necessary approvals at least three business days before your flight.

An oversized piece of luggage is one that is between 158 cm/62 inches and 203 cm/80 inches in total dimension. The total dimension of your bag is the sum of its width, height and length.

For luggage over 203 cm/80 inches in total dimension, you can expect to pay four times the additional baggage charge per piece. Please contact Customer Service for further details and necessary approvals at least three business days before your flight.

Baggage information

We are progressively moving from a weight allocation policy to a parts allocation policy. Your baggage allowance appears in your ticket itinerary and in Manage Reservation.

Note:

  • If your flight class was upgraded with the upgrade offer, your baggage allowance is still based on the allowance on your original ticket.
  • If your itinerary includes other airlines, the Cathay Pacific Airlines Baggage Policy may differ. Visit carrier rules for more details.

Musical instruments

You can travel with your musical instruments as checked luggage, hand luggage or cabin luggage, depending on their size and shape.

To prevent any damage, we request that musical instruments be stored in a hard protective case with rounded edges. Depending on the size of your instrument, you may need to check it in or purchase an additional seat.

Carry-on instruments

Hand baggage

You can bring small musical instruments (such as flutes or violins) onto the plane as part of your carry-on baggage allowance. Make sure they are stored in a hard case and can be stored safely inside the overhead locker.

Weight must not exceed 7 kg (15 lb), including case.

For all classes of travel, the dimensions of hand-carried musical instruments must not exceed 93 x 39 x 24 cm or 36 x 15 x 9 inches (height x width x depth), including case.

Proven Instruments

Large musical instruments, such as a guitar or cello, that exceed the limits mentioned above or the carry-on Cathay Pacific Airlines Baggage Policy must be checked. Please note that weight and dimension restrictions apply to checked baggage. These include the instrument's hard case.

Buy an additional seat for your musical instrument

You can store larger musical instruments (like a guitar or cello) in a purchased seat if you don't want to check them in. You must store your instrument in a hard case, while our ground staff will strap it upright to the seat in the provided duffel bag.

Due to temperature variation, expansion and contraction of the neck of stringed instruments may occur. We advise passengers to loosen the ropes before traveling to avoid strain or damage.

Dimensions must not exceed 136 x 48 x 44 cm or 54 x 19 x 17 inches (height, upright x width x depth), including case.^

Weight must not exceed 32 kg (70 lb), including case. +

If the thickness of the musical instrument's hard case is between 12 inches (31 cm) and 17 inches (44 cm), the instrument must be held upside down due to space limitations.

If connecting from another airline, check baggage restrictions, which may vary from Cathay Pacific's weight allowance. When in doubt, always use the lowest dimension and weight restriction. Please note that the weight allowance includes the hard case.

Sports equipment

If you need to travel with sports equipment such as skis or skateboard, please take note of our guidelines, which change depending on the route you fly.

Oversized cabin baggage

You can purchase an extra seat for your large or valuable item, so you can take it into the cabin. All oversized carry-on baggage must not contain dangerous goods and must comply with our guidelines for restricted and prohibited items. Please book your ticket with our reservation office rather than online, so we can help you arrange your extra seating.

Cathay Pacific Cabin Baggage

Cathay Pacific passengers are allowed to bring carry-on luggage on board their flight; however, the specific excess depends on the class of service booked.

Economy and Premium Economy passengers are allowed to take one piece of hand luggage on board. It must not exceed a total weight of 7 kg.

Business passengers may take on board one piece of hand luggage whose weight must not exceed a total weight of 10 kg. First Class passengers may also carry one piece of hand luggage, the weight of which must not exceed a total weight of 15 kg.

No piece of hand luggage must exceed the maximum dimensions of 23 cm x 36 cm x 56 cm. All passengers are also allowed to carry one small item on board the aircraft. This includes small bags, laptop bags, small backpacks, camera bags or briefcases.

Cathay Pacific Excess Baggage

If your checked baggage exceeds the allowed limit or you wish to purchase additional baggage, excess baggage charges will apply. To calculate how much you will have to pay per kilo of supplement, you will have to take into account your flight area. Please visit the Cathay Pacific website directly for more detailed information on these charges.
