There are three main types of authentication factors: 

Knowledge factors: These factors are based on something that the user knows, such as a password or a PIN.  Possession factors: These factors are based on something that the user has, such as a security token or a smartphone.  Inherence factors: These factors are based on something that the user is, such as a fingerprint or a voice pattern.
