Typical Applications of ZigBee Module Networking in the Field of IoT

What is ZigBee? It is a wireless ad hoc network communication technology with a short distance, self-organizing network, low power consumption, low speed, and low cost.

ZigBee router is usually abbreviated as ZR). Usually, the router can act as a parent node or a child node in a ZigBee network. Besides, it has the functions of information forwarding and auxiliary coordinator to maintain the network.

ZigBee end-device is usually abbreviated as ZED. In the ZigBee network, its function is the simplest. ZigBee end-device can only join the network, and it is the most terminal sub-node device. It can only communicate with its parent node. If two terminals need to communicate, they must go through the parent node for multi-hop or single-hop communication. It is the largest number of nodes allowed in a ZigBee network, and it is also the only network device that allows low power consumption.

In addition, according to the network structure, ZigBee can be divided into three types: Star Network, Tree Network, and Mesh Network.

  1. Star Network

ZigBee star network belongs to the simplest network topology in the ZigBee network. It consists of a coordinator (central node) and several routers and end devices (subordinate nodes). In this structural network, each subordinate node can only communicate with the central node. If communication between two subordinate nodes is required, data must be forwarded through the central node.

  1. Tree Network

The ZigBee tree network also consists of a coordinator, several routers, and end devices, but the ZigBee tree network can be regarded as composed of multiple star networks. Each tree branch (router with nodes) can be regarded as the "central node" that forms the star network. Each sub-device can only communicate with its parent node, and the highest-level parent node is the coordinator. In the tree network, the coordinator builds the entire network, and the router acts as a connection point to spread the network outward in a tree shape.

  1. Mesh Networking

The ZigBee mesh network is built on the ZigBee tree network structure. In the ZigBee mesh network, in addition to meeting all the functions of the ZigBee tree network, there is also a communication relationship between its adjacent routers, which makes the dynamic distribution of the network more flexible and the routing capability more stable and reliable.
