The seventh generation Apple Watch is now available. The question is whether or not the asking price of $768 NZ is justified. Well, that's up to you to decide.

The Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum hasn't been through extensive testing by our experts, but their first views may help you determine whether it's worth you to get one. If you're an Apple Watch diehard who wants a bigger display and quicker charging time, you may want to consider upgrading to the Series 7. However, for less tech-savvy users or those who are new to the Apple Watch, these improvements may not make the Series 7 much better than the Apple Watches that came before.

What changes did Apple make to the Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum?

The bigger, 45 mm Retina display is one of the most noticeable upgrades to the Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum. (the watch face). The redesign eliminates the bezel around the display, making the screen larger than it was on the Series 6, Series SE, and Series 3 watches. Apple claims the Series 7 is the most durable of its watches because of improvements in construction built to handle the bigger display, as well as the use of 100% recyclable aluminum in the case. Further, Apple claims that the front crystal is more than 50% thicker than the Series 6's, making it the company's "strongest front crystal ever." Furthermore, the front crystal's revised flat base supposedly adds strength and resistance to harm.

Mark Smirniotis, the senior editor at Wirecutter, mentioned the Apple Watch Series 7's improved charging times during our coverage of Apple's autumn event. The Series 7 is said to go from 0% to 80% in 45 minutes, and to charge enough for up to eight hours of sleep monitoring in only eight minutes. The blood-oxygen and electrocardiogram sensors, together with the always-on display and QWERTY keyboard, are nice extras. Apple also highlights the Series 7's eco-friendliness, saying it made extensive use of recyclable components including tungsten, tin, and aluminum.

Is the Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum worth the investment?

The Apple Watch Series 7 Aluminum's new features may make your life easier and more convenient, but the $768 price tag may discourage you. Mark suggests upgrading if you own a Series 5 or an earlier model since there may be enough benefits in the new watch to justify the price.

The Apple Watch SE, an earlier model, is a viable alternative for those who don't need the Series 7's bigger screen or other upgrades. Even with that older model, you can still use Apple's Messages, HomeKit, and Fitness apps. You can also use Apple Pay to store your cards, attend meditation classes, and listen to your entire music and podcast library. While the newest model costs $768, the SE can be had for $280.

However, senior staff writer at Wirecutter Nick Guy recommends the Series 7 over the SE and the discontinued Series 6: "Last year, we recommended that most people choose the Apple Watch SE over the Apple Watch Series 6 because we thought the benefits the Series 6 offered fell just short of justifying the higher price," Nick says. With its bigger display, tougher glass, and quicker charging, the Series 7 surpasses that barrier and becomes the model we recommend this year.
