Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a mind-body therapy that combines elements of acupuncture, psychology, and cognitive behavioral therapy. It is a simple, yet effective way to release negative emotions and physical pain.

Emotional Freedom Technique: An Alternative Therapy for Physical Pain and Emotional Distress

How EFT Works:

EFT is based on the idea that negative emotions and physical pain are caused by disruptions in the body’s energy system. When we experience a negative emotion, such as anger, fear, or sadness, it creates a blockage in our energy system. This blockage can lead to physical pain, as well as emotional distress.

EFT works by tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on the negative emotion or pain. This tapping helps to release the blockage in the energy system and restore balance.

How to Do EFT:

There are many different ways to do EFT. Here is a basic EFT tapping sequence:

  1. Identify the negative emotion or pain you want to work on.
  2. Rate the intensity of the emotion or pain on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being no pain or emotion and 10 being the worst pain or emotion you have ever felt.
  3. Tap on the following acupressure points while saying out loud the following affirmation: “Even though I have this (emotion or pain), I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
  • The karate chop point: This is the point on the outside of your hand, between the base of your pinky finger and the wrist crease.
  • The eyebrow point: This is the point on the eyebrow, about halfway between the bridge of the nose and the outer edge of the eyebrow.
  • The side of the eye point: This is the point on the side of the eye, about halfway between the bridge of the nose and the outer corner of the eye.
  • The under-eye point: This is the point under the eye, about halfway between the tear duct and the outer corner of the eye.
  • The chin point: This is the point on the chin, about halfway between the bottom of the lips and the tip of the chin.
  • The collarbone point: This is the point on the collarbone, about halfway between the neck and the breastbone.
  • The underarm point: This is the point on the inside of the arm, about 4 inches below the armpit.

Repeat the tapping sequence for 3–5 rounds, or until the intensity of the emotion or pain decreases by at least half.

EFT has been shown to be effective for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
