Have you ever wondered why the idea of the afterlife pops up whenever we think of limbo – death and the unknown?

The concept of limbo has intrigued philosophers and theologians for a long time. It has been the subject of debate between people across various religions and cultures – often speculating and exploring this topic. When we look deeper, we find different interpretations of limbo, with multiple angles at each end, such as philosophical, religious, and historical points of view.

Let us find out, in this article, how the Latin word “limbus” developed a distinct characteristic across various belief systems and made its reputation as the state that rises from the shadows –sometimes interpreted as the staircase to death.

Limbo – Philosophically and Religiously

Throughout history, philosophers have explored the concept of limbo, contemplating each scenario and pondering the idea of an intermediate state for souls. What is the meaning of life and afterlife? What is the nature of our existence? How do we rely on limbo?

Such are the questions that have provided a fertile ground for discussions about justice, closure, and escaping death.

When we delve into the depths of Christian theology, we find limbo to be the place that holds the souls that were not considered sinful enough to be condemned to Hell, but because they were unbaptized, they could not enter Heaven. These unbaptized individuals remained in limbo – the compassionate alternative.

Apart from Christianity, the concept of limbo can also be found in Islam. Barzakh is the Islamic concept where the departed souls stay in this intermediary state, awaiting the Day of Judgement.

In some forms of Hinduism and Buddhism, the concept of Bardo aligns with the idea of limbo. It is considered the transitional or liminal state between death and rebirth.

Captivating Human Imagination

The notion of limbo has offered a unique lens to us. Through this lens, we are able to contemplate the mysteries of life, death, and the afterlife – continuing to captivate the human imagination. Although its popularity has decreased in recent years, books like Rules of Limbo ensure that the concept of limbo remains noteworthy.

In Rules of Limbo, Tamatha Rawls and Aralyn Kraft beautifully portray limbo as the state where the deceased find a chance to redeem themselves and reclaim their pasts. It is also where organized crime prevails for the living (the perfect hiding spot).

But why does limbo leave us feeling powerless and suffocated? Is it because limbo is uncertain and manifests an unjust trap?

In this book, when the protagonist, Randy, finds himself in the grasp of limbo, he is given two choices – to find the person responsible for killing him or to accept eternal peace and let go of it all.

What would you do in this situation? Would you give in to the struggles of limbo which come at the cost of living with a sad conscience? Or would you pursue justice – embracing the uncertain conditions of your existence?

Find out what Randy did in Rules of Limbo.
