Memorial Day is a federal day observed in the US on the last Monday of May each year. It is a day dedicated to remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the US Armed Forces. Charleston, South Carolina: The Birthplace of Memorial Day
One of the earliest recorded instances of such observance occurred in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1865, a group of former slaves, along with teachers and missionaries, organized a ceremony to honor Union soldiers who had died while being held captive in a makeshift prisoner of war camp. The former slaves knew about a mass grave of Union soldiers that had been hastily buried at a racetrack. On May 1, they gathered to properly bury and decorate the soldiers' graves, and in doing so, initiated what is considered to be one of the first Memorial Day ceremonies. The gathering in Charleston was a powerful symbol of reconciliation. Former slaves and former slave owners came together to honor the fallen soldiers and provide them with a proper resting place. The ceremony included speeches, singing, and the laying of flowers on the graves. It was a poignant moment that demonstrated the healing and unifying power of remembering and honoring those who had died in service to the nation.
