How do I find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19

To find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19 it is necessary to dig down below the Y=15 mark. After this point, the further down you dig, the better the chance of finding Diamonds.

Minecraft 1.18 introduced several important changes to Minecraft's world generation. If you're playing Minecraft 1.18 or later, you can go down below Y=0 and into negative figures. Below Y=0, you'll find all the usual ores, including Diamonds, embedded in Deepslate blocks instead of regular Stone blocks.

See the graph below of distributions of ore for more details on where to find the highest concentration of Diamonds and other resources:

Diamond generates at Y=15 and increases in frequency as you descend. To see the current Y-Level, press F3 and you will be visible on the coordinates displayed. The current level of your bottom half is shown by the second number after "XYZ".

However it is true that if you find that a Diamond is set to be placed near an open air block during world generation, it has the chance of not producing. This makes it difficult to locate diamonds in caves. You'll need to spend some time digging through the earth to increase the chances of finding them.

So, in summary: to find diamonds quickly go as low as you can go until you get to bedrock then start strip-mining!

How to locate Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17 and earlier

If you're still playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you'll be able to find Diamond Ore in every Overworld biome that is between Y-levels 1-15. They spawn most frequently between levels 5-12. If you wish to maximize the chances of finding Diamonds in your Overworld biome keep your sights on these two levels.

Whichever version of Minecraft you're playing with, Diamonds will spawn in small veins that can be up to 9 blocks at a time, although very occasionally you'll find larger veins made up of multiple veins touching each one. Even at the appropriate levels, Diamonds are pretty rare.

The best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft

Diamond Ore can only be mined using an Iron Pickaxe or better. As of 1.18, Diamonds are far less common in open spaces like caves, which means to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds in Minecraft you should strip-mine in straight lines in all directions.

The best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19 is to dig down to level 57 and create an extensive 2-block-tall tunnel in any direction. Then, begin mining to either side in 2x1 tunnels. Each tunnel has a two-block gap.

When you are satisfied that you have removed all Diamonds from that level, you can begin the process at level 53. You'll be able see all Diamonds that form between levels -58 and 51 if you dig this way at both levels -57 and 53. This lets you obtain the greatest amount of Diamonds without running into blocks of Bedrock which could hinder your strip-mining progress.

If you're playing on Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you can use the exact same method using levels 6 and 10.

When mining, it's a good idea to keep an Water Bucket with you, because pockets of lava are quite frequent at these levels. Also, remember to bring plenty of torches to light your path and prevent mobs from appearing in your tunnels. You can also illuminate your path with Night Vision potions - though it won't stop mobs from spawning.
