Because of this fact, more and more Americans are buying sunless tanning lotions, creams, and sprays that enable them to sport a sun-soaked glow any time they want—whether during the summer or during winter. But the question now arises of how to take care of that healthy glow you get from self tanning. Indeed, it is important for you to pay attention to some things that can damage your tan or make it uneven.

For those of you who are fans of self tanning or who are about to use sunless tanning products, here are some useful tips on how to maintain that healthy tan!

Wait for it to completely dry. Don’t be impatient when self tanning. Read the instructions carefully and note how long it needs for the sunless tanning lotion to dry. Then, just to be sure, add an extra 5-15 minutes to the time given—just to make sure the sunless tanning product you’ve applied has dried enough. Then, wear something loose for at least an hour so that your clothes will not absorb some of the sunless tanning solution. This is to prevent uneven tanning.

Avoid contact with water and sweating. To make sure you get an even and lasting tan, steer clear of strenuous activities that will cause you to sweat. You also need to keep away from water; so don’t take a bath! Ensure that your body stays dry for a minimum of three hours after application. This will allow for the sunless tanning lotion to be completely absorbed into your skin. If you can stand it, please wait at least 8 hours before taking a shower.

Do not exfoliate. Be sure to exfoliate and moisturize well at least a few days before self tanning. You need to make sure your skin is smooth for an even and lasting tan. BUT once you’ve applied your tan, don’t exfoliate as it will rub off the tan from your skin.

Moisturize. Regularly applying lotion to your skin is one way to ensure that your skin is moisturized. Moisturizing prolongs your tan, as well as keeps it form for that glowing golden brown look.

Avoid the use of certain products. Generally, there are skin care products to avoid if you want to maintain your tan. Read the packet that comes with your sunless tanning product in order to be sure. Usually, the things to avoid are: (1) anything with bleach like whitening lotions and soaps; (2) Products that inhibit hair growth that make your tan turn yellow; (3) products for treating acne; (4) products that contain alcohol like toners; (5) age-defying products that aim to increase the rate of skin regeneration; and (6) cleansing products and makeup removers.

Apply a second coat for a darker tan. After you’ve taken a bath, you can put on a second coating to your newly applied tan. Make sure you really want a darker hue before trying to finish off the sunless tanning tube in one go.
