Your Xbox Live account will give you access to numerous options that allow you and your family members to play online the way you like. You can manage all of your settings at account.xbox.com/settings but here's a rundown of the most important ones:
"JOIN MULTIPLAYER GAME" SETTINGS
If your settings are set to prevent you from joining multiplayer games, you can't play multiplayer games on Minecraft, including shared local worlds Realms, servers or even the realms. To enable multiplayer in Minecraft, make sure this setting is set to "Allow.'
"OTHERS can be able to communicate via voice or TXT, as well as invites" Settings
If you have your settings set to block communication from others, you will still be allowed to participate in multiplayer games on Minecraft but you won't view messages in chat from other players or receive invitations to join games played by other players.
Child Accounts - UNDER 13S
You must have parental consent to create an Xbox Live account if you are less than 13 years old. Parents can add a child account at https://account.microsoft.com/family/addmember.
All child accounts are blocked from multiplayer and communication. This means that until the parent logs in and alters the settings to allow multiplayer, child accounts can't play in the worlds of other players, or on Realms or servers or chat with other players online.

NEVER SHARE YOUR Xbox Live ACCOUNT PASSWORD
Your account does not only contain your personal information, but if you own an account in the Realm or have made a purchase in the marketplace, it is the record of your online purchases in Minecraft. It is not recommended to divulge your Xbox Live account password.
THERE'S NO WAY TO GET FREE MINECRAFT COINS OR MARKETPLACE CONTENT
Anyone who requests account details or personal information, and then promises you Minecraft Coins or content in exchange is not doing you any good! There is no other way to get Coins or market content or to transfer Coins to another person other than through the game.
