How To Teach Children to Be Compassionate To Animals
3 min read

Raising children compassionate towards all life forms should be parents’ utmost priority.

By teaching children to be kind and compassionate to animals, we’re teaching them to be compassionate toward all living beings. It’s an important value that will help them grow up into kind individuals. If our children learn to be kind to animals, they will protect them and their habitats.

Here are some tips that can help teach kids compassion toward animals:

Observing Animals in Their Natural Habitat

The most effective way to teach children how animals have a unique place in the world is to take them to visit animals in their natural habitat. However, at the same time, we must condemn zoos and circuses where animals are kept captive. Spending some peaceful time in nature, i.e., bushwalking, taking a stroll in the park, hiking, etc., is a great way to interact with nature and develop a connection with the natural world. Teach your kids to respect all animals by protecting their habitats and being kind to them.

Entrust Them With the Responsibilities of an Animal

If you have a pet at home, give your child responsibility for meeting the animal’s basic needs by setting some age-appropriate tasks like (refilling the food bowl, for instance). Teaching children to be responsible for the needs of a pet is an essential way to nurture kindness and compassion in children for animals. Teach them the importance of providing animals food, water, and shelter and how daily walks or exercise benefit an animal’s health. Teach them that an animal’s health is as important as any human’s. Also, emphasize how important companionship is as animals can also feel lonely.

Encourage Respect

If your children are new to nurturing and handling animals, teach them to be gentle and avoid touching an animal that shows signs of wanting to be left alone. Discourage your kid from taunting or disturbing an animal, as this can manifest into patterns of disrespect. In case of an unwanted house guest, like a mouse or a spider, trap it safely and release it outside. This will teach them that all lives matter. Setting examples of such kind, respectful, and considerate behavior will be imperative in teaching them powerful lessons.

Being kind towards animals is a must; teaching this from a young age is critical in instilling this value in our children. Fluffy by Thomas Stevens is a great book to introduce the idea of kindness and compassion towards animals to your children.
