Liquid wallpaper - is it harmful to health?
4 min read

Liquid wallpaper quickly gained confidence and popularity among buyers due to its functional and aesthetic qualities. They are excellent for applying to substrates that are not even, masking even noticeable defects, creating an even and beautiful coating, and are very easy to handle. Nevertheless, one of the most important questions for many is whether liquid wallpaper is harmful to health.

What do they consist of

Such coatings are sold in dry form, packaged in packages and before use, they must be diluted with plain warm water. To clarify the issue of possible harm to health, it is necessary to find out what such a mixture consists of and how it can be dangerous. The main components of decorative mixtures of this plan are:

  • Fiber material, consisting of cotton threads and cellulose fiber.
  • Dyes, which give the mortar a certain color.
  • Adhesive base, which, when diluted with water, becomes a binder for all components and ensures reliable adhesion of the mortar to the surface.
  • Various texture additives, which give the created surface certain visual effects. This can be glitter, cork crumbs and other fillers.

Having analyzed each of the components of the mixture separately, we can conclude whether such decorative coatings are harmful or not. To do this, consider all the components in more detail.

Possible harm

The proportions in which all the components of the finished mixture are contained are such that the main mass of the solution are cotton or cellulose fibers. These are absolutely natural materials, which in either liquid or dry form cannot pose any significant danger to human health. Consequently, the main component of the solution cannot be considered hazardous and will not cause any harm. The dyes used to tint the composition also consist of natural pigments and are completely safe.

As for the glue base, everything is exactly the same here - the components used to create it are obtained by processing microcellulose. In principle, this is exactly the same adhesive that is used to glue standard wallpaper. Accordingly, if you are not afraid of the usual adhesive CMC glue, the analog of which is an adhesive base, then the liquid decorative coatings are not afraid of you.

The components responsible for visual effects, or texture additives, may be of artificial origin and, in theory, there could be harm from them. However, the additives used in most cases are also of natural origin, for example - cork chips, and artificial components are granules of chemically inert substances, like decorative threads, flock and other safe components.

Liquid wallpaper - is it harmful to health?

Based on the points considered, we can conclude that all the components included in such solutions are natural and can do no harm, and, therefore, the question whether the liquid wallpaper is harmful is answered negatively.

What to pay attention to

Despite the fact that such coatings, according to studies are safe, no one is insured against the purchase of fake mixes. Such liquid wallpaper, of course, can be harmful to health, as no one can guarantee that their composition meets all requirements and environmental regulations.

Therefore, it is necessary to study very carefully the product that is supposed to be purchased. If the seller does not have certificates and other documents, confirming the safety of the proposed product, it is better to refrain from buying.

In addition, before you decide to decorate the room with such compositions, you need to think about another factor: the service life of the coating. Applied to the surface, they last extremely long and do not lose their properties for many years. However, it is this point that can be a disadvantage if you plan to regularly update the interior - it is very difficult to remove such a coating from the surface.
