The critics were correct in their assessment of this prequel, although their reasons were misguided. It is a well-known fact that "Jedi" is officially recognized as a religion in the United States. This level of devotion highlights the immense anticipation surrounding the film, which ultimately resulted in a strong backlash against George Lucas when his latest creation failed to ignite the same passion as its predecessor did twenty-two years prior. As a lover of cinema, I find this situation more amusing than disheartening, as it reinforces my cynical tendencies. What intrigues me the most is the stark contrast between Lucas' perspective on his films and that of his fans. Despite the grandeur of his productions, Lucas remains remarkably humble. He openly acknowledges the brilliance of directors like Kurosawa and Kubrick without any hint of unease. Lucas possesses a deep understanding of his craft and does not harbor any delusions of grandeur, and for that, he has my utmost respect. However, upon revisiting The Phantom Menace, I found myself reaching for a bottle of Excedrin instead of contemplating Lucas' grounded approach. Unlike the carefree and unpretentious nature of the original trilogy, Episode I attempts to replicate the artifice of Barry Lyndon but falls miserably short, blending it with the juvenile elements of Star Wars. The film comes across as stuffy and overly serious in all the wrong ways. It seems to believe that it must establish the foundation of its anticipated saga with utmost seriousness to be considered legitimate, while the attempts to evoke childhood joy feel out of place and lack any charm. The pod race, despite being excessively hyped, is rather uninteresting. However, the tempo improves significantly, albeit briefly, when Lucas introduces phallic symbolism in a fiery lightsaber duel involving Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ray Park's sinister Darth Maul. Other than that, The Phantom Menace fails to establish the pseudo-mythic undertones found in the original films, causing the film's momentum to abruptly halt right from the start. This rendition of Star Wars takes on a period piece approach, making it a challenging experience similar to a Mel Gibson film.
