"I.S.S." unfolds within the US/Russia International Space Station, revealing the unsettling possibility of being overheard in space. This gripping thrill ride lasts around 90 minutes, utilizing every moment to its fullest. The first half-hour sets the stage like a precarious Jenga tower, with each line of dialogue foreshadowing tense and terrifying moments to come. The remaining hour is a harrowing journey of imminent danger and shifting loyalties. And as we all know, Jenga towers eventually crumble.
Despite being aware of how each piece of information, or lack thereof, intensifies the pressure on the six characters, we are captivated by the unfolding events. This is largely due to the exceptional performances by Chris Messina, Ariana DeBose, and John Gallagher, Jr. as the American crew, as well as Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbæk as the Russian crew. The film also benefits from Geoff Wallace's outstanding production design and the expected yet surprising special effects. We witness the weightless crew floating through the space station, as we've seen in movies and real space flight footage. When someone bleeds in zero gravity, the blood forms little floating droplets. And in a weightless environment, throwing a punch or firing a gun becomes a whole new challenge.
Similar to "Alien," "I.S.S." generates immediate tension by confining its setting far from Earth. We are introduced to the characters and the space station through the arrival of Kira, a scientist, and Christian, a returning officer. As Kira interacts with the other astronauts and experiences weightlessness, we also witness her lab mice adapting to the lack of gravity. This serves as our first ominous hint: "They're afraid with nothing to hold onto. It does not end well."
There's another clue that suggests a potential issue. Gordon Barrett, the American commanding officer, explains to Kira that the faint humming sound they hear is the life support system. He adds, "If you don't hear that hum, it's time to worry." Kira and we will both be on the lookout for that silence. These initial scenes also highlight the intensified workplace dynamics, as they are constantly together, day in and day out.
