Making Minecraft and Mods on Steam Deck is Easy and Simple

2 min read

Want to get Minecraft running smoothly on Steam Deck or a regular Linux desktop with minimal effort? Here's a way to do it , and it makes it easy. For this I picked the PolyMC launcher (a fork of MultiMC) available on Flathub as the official Minecraft launcher Flatpak does not save your password on Steam Deck and PolyMC of course supports modding too.

Below is a video tutorial with text steps.

The video is on the Steam Deck section of the PolyMC Wiki!

Text steps

- Install PolyMC through the Discover Software Centre on Steam Deck or Flathub directly for desktop Linux. Start PolyMC and add your account in the upper right corner. It supports Mojang logins and Microsoft logins. In the main PolyMC Settings, then click Minecraft in the left-hand panel, then select the option to close PolyMC when the game window is opened. If you don't do this do this, the Steam Deck will flicker between the two windows when you launch the Game Mode/ Deck UI. ian's blog Ensure that Java is updated in PolyMC Settings. This is required for the latest Minecraft. Click Add Instance at the top left. Next, select normal Minecraft or mods with built-in search. It will install everything you require. If you want to launch directly from Steam you must go to the Games menu up the top, then click Add a game that is not Steam and then find PolyMC in the list of games.

Some YouTube comments suggested you test out modpacks that are optimized. However, I couldn't notice a significant difference in performance or power usage that would justify them on the Deck when testing the same map seed. Controller mods were also suggested, however they're rarely updated and often only compatible with specific Minecraft versions so sticking with Steam Input and just adjusting only a few keys is the best solution for this.
