Minecraft Goats - how to Breed and Tame Them?

5 min read

There's been plenty of discussion about the 'caves side of the Minecraft 1.17 update but not much about the 'cliffs' or their latest Minecraft mob goats. We get it. Minecraft axolotls are the best underwater companions and could be game changing. The Minecraft Warden on the other hand is a new terrifying monster that is totally blind, but is a mighty beast. But, don't you think of the Minecraft goats?

Yes, Minecraft has goats. Finally! There are many kinds and kinds of goats in the real reality, including the ibex who can walk on steep inclines and the fainting goat. The Minecraft goats are based upon the Rocky Mountain goat (or Oreamnos Americanus) and are well-suited to both subalpine and alpine climates. They aren't goats. They are more closely associated with antelopes, the square-shaped fakers.

They're still us and they behave as the woolly mountain goats that we are awestruck by. This is all you need to know about Minecraft goats.

Where can I find goats in Minecraft?

Goats in Minecraft are found on top of surfaces at a level of seven or higher like cliffs. It isn't apparent that it matters too much whether the cliffs are covered in snow or grass however they seem to move around more in the daylight hours.

If you're lucky you may also come across goats who scream. The only difference between them and regular goats is their bleats. You'll have to pay attention to locate them.

What do Minecraft goats do?

As we've mentioned they're based off the Rocky Mountain goat - an antelope masquerading as a goat for coolness sake. It's pretty hard to simulate their distinctive trait: being able to climb up and balance on a slope.

So instead goats in Minecraft can leap two blocks higher than the standard one block. They can clear small gaps with ease and look majestic when they do so. They can leap up to ten blocks into the air if they are faced with blocks of powder snow or a gap in the ground.

They have ten health points (5 full hearts) and can take seven damage (3 and a half heart).

The majority of goats are rather docile, and, as CaptainSparklez observed during the 1.17 beta snapshots, they will not attack you if you strike them first. Instead, they'll choose randomly you're needed to be yelled off a ledge and ram into you with all force. Even if they do get a little angry, they're more likely to attack enemies to protect themselves. If threatened the goat will flee from its attacker.

How do I obtain the Goat Horn?

The Minecraft 1.17 update introduces a brand new item, the goat horn. You can collect up to two goat horns each time the goat rams into blocks however they only drop one at a time. The easiest way to acquire a goat Horn is to get several goats in one place and have them charge at you. Their horns should fall off if they charge at a block.

If you make use of a goat horn you'll sound as if you're blowing through the horn to sound an alarm. It's the same sound that's heard during raids against Minecraft villages. What's the purpose of this sound? Some people believe that the goat horn could be used to make an easter egg. However in the moment now, the horn makes only the sound of raid.

What do Minecraft Goats eat for their food?
Minecraft blog

Goats were the first animal domesticated in the real world due to their grass-eating, milk-producing udders and delicious meat. You can feed them wheat to get them to follow your example. This will get them in a love-struck state and allow you to breed them. You can also make milk by putting an empty bucket on them. If the goat is on fire, you could cook mutton or raw meat on them. But who would do such a horrible thing?

Their ill-tempered nature does make it impossible to ride them, unlike Minecraft's horses They're likely to be the more valuable pet.

There's still much to learn about the past and future of Minecraft through the Caves & Cliffs update. And it's not only about the new mobs. From copper ore, to the Lush Caves, there is something for everyone and more is to come when the Minecraft 1.18 update's release date finally arrives.
