The Minecraft juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. The developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms including PCs, Macs consoles, mobile, and PCs. About 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day since its inception. The game is addicting. More than 40 million players play Minecraft every month to play with the axe, shovel and sword. There aren't many games that have been close to hitting 100 million players and that's not even Tetris.

A large part of this success is due to the game's open structure and unlimited potential. As long as the outward-facing geometry of the game is composed of simple, colorful blocks, players can create whatever they want. The emphasis on creativity is the reason that many players, old and young have been drawn to the game and continue to play for years after its release. Mojang has been providing regular updates to the game, including new mechanics, creatures and materials. The game's flexibility has also made it a smash-hit in the classroom, where it is used to teach art, geology programming, and many other subjects.

Many were wondering what Microsoft was thinking of for Mojang when it purchased the company a couple of years back. Is there a sequel? Some kind of exclusivity to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? Actually, none of that has been realized. Minecraft is available on more than platforms than ever before, and there's been no announcement of a Minecraft 2.' Instead, we have an HoloLens Minecraft version, a spin-off adventure series from Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will eventually result in a new version that is focused on education Minecraft. Soon, there will also be an app for China.

Minecraft's popularity hasn't diminished. The game's strengths aren't an end-to-end story or amazing graphics -- because of this, it has a seemingly timeless appeal that attracts young children as they get old enough to play it. As long as that continues, Minecraft will continue to sell in extraordinary numbers.
