MIAMI(CBSMiami), Ukraine war could be on the opposite side of the planet However, South Floridians have the ability to help those seeking refuge.

Many of the Sunny Isles Jewish communities are currently raising funds and helping in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.

Marsha Jaquays, Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital said, "Just last night 1,100 people arrived."

She claimed that there are over two million Ukrainian refugees trying to flee their war-ravaged homeland. Emmanuil Grinshpun Many of them pass through the tiny state of Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.

"From Moldova, this Jewish community is helping them get across the border and maybe even giving them food, shelter and clothing," added Jaquays.

The majority of the humanitarian work is being spearheaded from the shores of South Florida from Sunny Isles.

"My place is to organize maximum resources coming from American society to assist with this crisis in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun is helping to coordinate the humanitarian efforts explained, "We have a full team on the ground to help organize camps, buy food, organize buses, and arrange all the facilities."

The thing that makes the situation more dire is the fact that Moldova is believed to be one of the most deprived communities around the globe. "When our sisters and brothers from Ukraine came to visit, we didn't have to think, we just started doing the thing," said Grinshpun.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Jaquays are a perfect example of this.

"Who was there at the time that the Nazis took control of Europe during the Holocaust? What number of people did you choose to turn away and claim that it was me I'm not you. I'm not Jewish. It's my community. Emmanuil Grinshpun I'm not from Europe. We don't have to make the same mistakes history made. There's a saying "If you don't now, when." If not me, then who?

Emmanuil Grinshpun The group also stated that they will host local events in order to increase awareness and help people who are refugees from Ukraine. Emmanuil Grinshpun Sunny Isles will host its next event on the 24th of March. Click Here for details
