How Do You Use a Functional Mushroom Tincture? Why Do You Make One?
Since the time of ancient Egypt, functional mushroom tinctures have been used to preserve and consume plants and mushrooms. As you might expect, for this technique of preparation to stand the test of time, it must be simple to construct and the tools must be available to a large audience. These quick fixes work well as a preservation technique, allowing you to keep fresh herbs and berries longer without worrying about them going bad.
In addition to providing a formula that is shelf-stable, tinctures also concentrate more polysaccharides and triterpenes from plants and lion's mane tincture giving the extract more efficacy than any other way of ingesting it. For instance, in addition to a water decoction or tea extraction, some active ingredients in woody or otherwise indigestible mushrooms, such as the triterpenoids and phenolic components from Reishi, Chaga, and Red Banded Polypore, will typically require an alcohol extraction.

We're pleased to announce that we collaborated with Bastyr University experts to develop the finest extraction techniques for the Cordyceps militaris lion's mane tincture we cultivate on the farm. The findings of this study suggest that our Cordyceps, like all mushrooms, should be tinctured in a double-extraction preparation, but at an initial alcohol concentration of 60%.

Steps to Make a Functional Cordyceps Mushroom Tincture:
Collect Cordyceps militaris fruiting bodies in the process. Add a dehydrator to them.
Step 2 of the double-extraction process is to begin the ethanol extraction phase.
Dried Cordyceps militaris should be placed in a clear jar with a tight-fitting lid to begin the double-extraction procedure.The jar should then be covered with a liquid solution that has a 60% alcohol content. According to the research conducted by Bastyr University, Cordyceps, a delicate fungus, has a concentration that is all its own. Ensure that the alcohol mixture has completely covered the mushroom. For our tinctures, we only use organic cane alcohol, however any clear grain alcohol will do. Let the tincture rest in a dimly lit place for at least two weeks. For optimal results, make sure to shake the jar every day.
Use a cheesecloth or tincture press to strain and press out the liquid from the lion's mane tincture after allowing them to sit for the designated amount of time in order to separate the liquid from the residual solid matter.The squeezed mushrooms should be kept and put aside. Put the alcohol extraction in an amber-colored jar, mark it with the name of the mushroom, the date it was pressed, and the amount of alcohol it contains, and keep it somewhere cool and out of the sun to preserve it.
The double-extraction process: water extraction:
Put the mushroom material that has been stored and squeezed into a stock pot or crock pot and heat it up. Give the mixture a generous covering of filtered water and let it boil or decoct for 15 minutes.
Press, Strain, and Combine:
Press the liquid from the lion's mane tincture using clean cheesecloth or a tincture press after the decoction has cooled. After composting the leftover mushrooms, prepare to blend the alcohol extracts and mushroom tea. Calculate the amount of water required to diluted the 60% original alcohol extract to the desired 35% alcohol percentage. Polysaccharides may precipitate out of solution once the two components of the extraction are mixed, so always shake the finished mushroom tincture before using.
