WRUP: you Think you're so Pretty Edition

We all want to be beautiful. Let's be honest that we all want to be beautiful. Unfortunately, if everyone was truly stunningly beautiful, we would likely not all be able to hide in the house and play video games. This particular writer, for example, is less like the butterfly, but more of an unholy union between the chimpanzee and the slime from the Dragon Quest series. The reality can be quite harsh at times.

Of course, to deal with the harsh reality we all have our favorite MMOs to play when the opportunity presents itself -- such as right now with this week's WRUP. In light of the recent success of the almost-MMO Minecraft, we wanted to know how important it was that the games they play be attractive. Take a look past the cut for our answers, and let us know in the comments what you're planning to play over the weekend! Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I'll be playing DIGDIGDIGDIG a little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG everything, and need to get ready to DIGDIGDIG leave for GDC. I might DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play a bit of Minecraft as well.

Graphics? Nah. It's all about the game.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna) Then I look back at older WRUPs and realize that I am boring... I am still having fun in City of Heroes. I suppose I'm trying to finish it because I am sure that my guild will grow when Cataclysm is released. I just got a new tanker, and wow! Now I can remember why I prefer controllers.

I don't consider myself an expert on graphics, as I play quite a few older games. I've even considered playing the new Ultima Online boats expansion. A game needs to contain something to counterbalance the ugly aspects, a few nuggets of nostalgia, brilliant strokes of gameplay , or compelling stories. What if the game is gorgeous but the gameplay is abysmal? I won't even give it a second glance.

Edward Marshall: If I have time, I'll play Fallen Earth.

Graphics aren't a big deal to me. However, I'm expecting more than ASCII in the current day and age.

Eliot Lefebvre - Final Fantasy XIV, naturally. I can't get enough of Final Fantasy XIV at the moment. I'm currently on a mission to find myself some better weapons and armor that aren't as fast, but a lot of fun because of the way things are presented. I'm also considering going offline to look through my massive collection of console games.

Simple graphics don't bother me, but there must be some reason. Stylized graphics are different from games that are just plain ugly. The line between "stylized" and "bad" is extremely subjective.

Greg Waller: I have been focusing all of my energy and time on WAR lately and I intend to keep that focus throughout the weekend as my new zealot battles Badlands through Tier 3. Regarding the bonus question: Eye candy is not a good game make. If the gameplay is more enjoyable then I'll be content with sub-par graphics.

Jef Reahard: I will be playing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock specifically, specifically the song 2112 of Rush, since I just had the pleasure of it blasting my eardrums live in Atlanta last night. Yes, music games are so 2007. But whatever. If I can manage any MMO, it'll be my usual AoC/EQII with an occasional side dish of FFXIV.

Krystalle Voecks: Following the upgrade of my desktop, I'm installing everything again. I anticipate many hours of downloading and installing this weekend. Other than that it's mostly Vanguard and I've spent some time reading the old Masquerade WoD sourcesbooks.

Graphics are the thing we love. Teen Time One Shots is a fantastic example of this. However, I don't believe that it's the final word in games. Minecraft is a hit because it's enjoyable and lets people be creative, not because it's visually stunning.

Lisa Poisso, @emused: We were looking over old WoW alts and decided to create the new race/class combination for Cataclysm. In terms of graphics, I wasn't sure they were as important to me as they are now until I revisited original EQ recently. If EverQuest's graphics were as good as the current standards, I'd play it again in the blink of an eye, however, as they are, the graphics are a major turnoff.

Patrick Mackey: I'm having some issues with my desktop right now However, assuming it works, I will be playing World of Tanks. I will be playing Champions. I was told that Demonflame was released on Friday via PTS.

As someone who plays StarCraft II on the lowest graphics settings, I'd have to say that graphics rarely matter. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't easily visible in that game. Visuals are used to inform the player of what is taking place in the game and if it's not clear the game's art designers have failed.
