More recent spray dryers, known as multiple-effect spray dryers, combat dust, and poor powder flow.

 The drying process involves two steps rather than drying the liquid in one. Similar to how it is with a single-effect dryer, the first step is at the top. And the second uses an integrated static bed at the drying chamber's base.

The humid environment of the bed causes smaller particles to clump together, resulting in more uniform particle sizes, usually between 100 and 300 m. And due to their larger particle size, these powders flow freely. So in the first drying stage, fine powders can be recycled in continuous flow at the top of the chamber, surrounding the liquid sprayed there, or at the bottom, inside the bed. So an external vibrating fluidized bed can then be used to finish drying the powder.

Spray dry is used in the production of pharmaceuticals to evenly disperse the active pharmaceutical ingredients into a polymer matrix for amorphous solid dispensation. The drug's active ingredients are in a higher state of energy in this state, which helps the drug spread throughout the patient's body.
