Tribal Tales: Immersing Yourself in Nagaland's Rich Cultural Heritage

Tribal Tales: Immersing Yourself in Nagaland's Rich Cultural Heritage
3 min read

There is a little, rather unexplored pocket of India, which is inhabited by groups of many ethnicities, each rightfully proud about their own heritage, and eager to share their tales with those who lend their hands and ears to. The landscape is as vibrant as the tribal tales, and the hospitality is as warm as the inhabitants' hearts. That is Nagaland, with her engulfing mystery and nature's splendor for one and all.

What Nagaland Has to Offer

Unfortunately enough, not many trusted tour operators offer the Nagaland Tour Package on a regular basis. However, Odyssey Travels firmly believes that anyone suffering from wanderlust should have Nagaland on the bucket list. From distinctive dining experiences to discerning heritage walks, as well as trekking, interaction with the real Nagas, and a visit to a genuine artisans' village, a one-week trip can offer everything that makes for a cherishing memory.

Going to Kisama

The heritage village of Kisama spreads across one hill slope. Two villages, namely PheSAMA and KIgwema generously donated some land to construct the village. And this is how the place has got its name. Bordered by lush, evergreen trees and breathtaking landscape, this village is also the venue of the annual hornbill festival.

The Hornbill Festival

Between the 1st and the 10th of December of every year, the Hornbill Festival is organized by the Nagaland State Tourism, along with Art and Culture Departments. The festival exhibits a tasteful blend of diverse cultural displays, all under a single roof. All the Naga tribes of Nagaland participate here. The festival aims to preserve and revive the rich Naga culture, as well as exhibit its traditions and extravaganza. And those participating here leave with an unforgettable and cherishing memory for a lifetime.

For the Trek lovers

As a first time trekker, you might find your pick in a trek to the mount Shurho. It is there you can explore the village life in the South Angami area, and enjoy a high tea with the locals, all along the paddy fields. The Nagaland Tour Package also encompasses going to a watch tower. Those reaching the top of the tower can enjoy the enthralling views of at least 10 of the nearby villages.

Visiting Angami Tribes

While a short trek might last about 3 hours, you can spend the rest of the day visiting Jakhama, one of the largest villages in Nagaland. The warrior tribe living there has a proud history of successful struggles against British forces. With beautiful terraced farms on one side and stories to feel proud of on the other, it can be one of the most rewarding parts of your Nagaland Tour Package.

Kohima, the Capital

A heritage walk across the streets of Kohima would take you to the Kohima Cathedral, the war cemetery, museum and the heritage bungalow. Do not miss the chance to learn about the role that this quaint city played during World War 2.

Package Inclusion and Exclusions

No matter the tour operator that you choose, make sure to check the inclusions, exclusions and value added services for the Nagaland Tour Package that they have to offer. Check the details for GST, meals, tips and permits, for example.
