What are the Various Kinds of Valves used in Hydraulic Systems?
3 min read

Hydraulic valves are defined as devices that are mechanical in nature. The purpose of these devices is to regulate the flow of the liquid within the hydraulic system. This regulation might include complete closing of the line, redirection of the flow or controlling the flow and directing it in a particular area. Each valve used in a hydraulic system is installed to fulfil specific requirements of that space. While there are a vast variety of valves available, we will discuss float, globe and swing check valve below. Read on to find out more on these.

The flow regulating float valve

Float valves are installed in hydraulic systems owing their flow control. A float valve is designed with a ball-float valve and an air-filled ball. This in itself is considered as a complete level of controller loop. The air-filled ball in the valve helps to stop the flow of the fluid once it reaches the desired level. A float valve is available in two varieties. These include direct float control and pilot operated float control. Direct float control enables a rise in the valve with the rise of the liquid in the tank. The pilot operated float control comes into the picture when the level of the liquid is high enough. This valve then helps to stop the flow and the liquid is accumulated in the upper chamber of the main control valve. The quality of these valves is determined by their pressure and operating temperature. Thus, they are not used for mechanisms that involve corrosive liquid.

The seamless globe valve

Globe valves are designed to regulate the flow of the liquid in a pipeline. Conventional globe valves are often used for throttling and isolation purposes. The fluid in these mechanisms flows through a hole in the seat of the valve. The flow is restricted by altering the distance between the seat and the moveable disc. The components of a globe valve include a bonnet, a disc or a plug, a stem and a seat. This valve is used across several industries for fuel oil systems, cooling water systems, turbine seals and lubes and even in chemical feed. Boiler vents and drains also rely on a globe valve to regulate the flow of water. These valves are highly reliable and have a high throttling capacity. They also render a fast operating mechanism owing to their shorter stroke length.

The low resistance swing check valves

Swing check valves are used as a mode to control any improper flow of gas and liquids. The design includes the valve being mounted with the help of a disc on a shaft. This disc then dangled of swung off the seat in order to create a forward flow of the liquid. Once the flow is restricted, the disc then swings back upon the seat in order to restrict the flow from reversing. A swing check valve is designed to have low resistance and the pressure of the flow remains reduced. The single unit construction of these valves eliminate the risk of external leakage.
