Why Should Students Learn to Code in School?
2 min read

Technology is everywhere and it facilitates an engagement with the world around us. Coding is the foundation of any technological invention and must be included as an essential part of the school curriculum for students. Regarding the ib Singapore curriculum, coding has taken a front seat to help students develop a global mindset in the long run. Even the international school in Singapore focuses on building a curriculum with at least the coding basics.

Top reasons students must learn coding from an early stage.

Coding Improves Computational Thinking

Computational thinking is a process prior to programming. Coding improves computational thinking in a way that assists in solving complex problems by separating them into small pieces, which is why kids with coding knowledge develop computational thinking skills early in life, which helps them in the long run.

Coding Sharpen Problem-Solving Skills

In a programming scenario, coders have to face plenty of challenges that they have to solve. Problem-solving skills result from breaking down problems and puzzles while prioritizing solutions. Such skills boost emotional intelligence, decision-making, creativity, and effective response.

Coding Improves Creativity

Creativity is the most significant quality in coding. Coders with unique creative intelligence help achieve life goals while working. It’s a mixture of both creativity and personality that develop with experience and age.

Conclusion

The knowledge of coding and its awareness is a major necessity in today's world. Therefore, parents should explore different curriculums and choose one for their child that focuses on teaching the students at least the basics of coding to help them in the long run.

Most parents and adults think - isn't it more important to teach children mathematics than coding? But the point is: mathematics is really important, but coding is equally important too because it helps you to practically think about problem-solving. Children don't yet develop a lot of mathematical theory to start solving real-world problems only through mathematics, whereas they can do that by learning coding. So, learning coding is not just an alternative. It is an absolute mandate to put children into coding primarily to develop their real-world problem-solving skills, logical thinking and algorithmic thinking.
