Your Guide to AirPods: Tips and Tricks for an Elevated Listening Experience
8 min read

AirPods are more than just wireless earbuds. They are smart devices that can do many things to enhance your audio experience. Whether you have the regular AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, you can use these tips and tricks to get the most out of them.

Pairing and Switching Devices

One of the best features of AirPods is how easy they are to pair with your Apple devices. If you have an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple TV, you can pair your AirPods with them in seconds. Just open the lid of the charging case near your device and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also pair your AirPods with a Mac by opening the Bluetooth menu and selecting your AirPods.

Once you pair your AirPods with one Apple device, they will automatically sync with all the other devices that use the same Apple ID. This means you can easily switch between devices without having to re-pair them every time. For example, you can listen to music on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad to watch a video, then switch to your Mac to join a Zoom call, all without touching your AirPods.

To switch devices, you can use the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad, the Bluetooth menu on your Mac, or the Music app on your Apple Watch. Just tap or click on the AirPlay icon and choose your AirPods from the list of available devices.

Customizing Your Settings

You can also customize your AirPods settings to suit your preferences. To do this, go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad and tap on the "i" icon next to your AirPods name. Here you can change the name of your AirPods, adjust the noise cancellation and transparency modes (for AirPods Pro and Max), change the double-tap or press-and-hold gestures, enable or disable automatic ear detection, and more.

You can also access some of these settings from the Control Center by long-pressing on the volume slider when your AirPods are connected. This will show you a menu where you can toggle between noise cancellation and transparency modes, enable conversation boost (for AirPods Pro), adjust the ambient noise level and tone balance (for AirPods Pro and Max), and access spatial audio settings (for AirPods Pro and Max).

Using Siri and Announce Notifications

Another great feature of AirPods is that they let you use Siri hands-free. You can simply say "Hey Siri" followed by your command or question, and Siri will respond through your AirPods. You can ask Siri to play music, make calls, send messages, set reminders, check the weather, control smart home devices, and more.

You can also have Siri announce notifications from any app in your ears when your AirPods are connected. This way, you don't have to look at your phone to stay updated. By default, Siri will only announce time-sensitive notifications from apps like Calendar or Reminders, but you can enable it for any app you want. To do this, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and toggle on Announce Notifications. Then tap on each app that you want Siri to announce notifications from and toggle on Announce Notifications for that app.

Skip songs with AirPods:

If you want to know how to skip songs with AirPods, you can use different methods depending on the model and settings of your AirPods. One of the most common methods is to use Siri, the voice assistant that can control your music and other functions. To use Siri, you can either say "Hey Siri" or press and hold the force sensor on the stem of one of the AirPods. Then you can say something like "Skip this song" or "Next track" to skip to the next song in your playlist. Another method is to use the press gesture on your AirPods. This gesture can be customized in the Bluetooth settings of your iPhone or iPad. You can choose which AirPod to use and what action to perform when you double-tap or press it. For example, you can set it to skip songs, pause/play, activate Siri, or do nothing. To skip songs with this method, you need to double-tap or press the force sensor on the AirPod that you have assigned to this action.

Enjoying Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos

If you have AirPods Pro or Max, you can enjoy spatial audio with dynamic head tracking for a more immersive sound experience. Spatial audio creates a 3D sound field that makes it seem like the sound is coming from all around you. Dynamic head tracking adjusts the sound based on how you move your head and device, so that it always stays in sync with what you're watching.

To use spatial audio, make sure your device is running iOS 15 or later (for iPhone) or iPadOS 15 or later (for iPad). Then go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual and toggle on Spatial Audio. You can also access this setting from the Control Center by long-pressing on the volume slider when your AirPods are connected.

You can enjoy spatial audio with any video content that supports Dolby Atmos or 5.1/7.1 surround sound. You can also listen to thousands of songs in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music. To do this, go to Settings > Music > Audio Quality and toggle on Dolby Atmos under Lossless Audio.

Finding Your AirPods

If you ever lose or misplace your AirPods, you can use the Find My app to locate them. The Find My app can show you the last known location of your AirPods on a map, and also play a sound on them to help you find them. You can also enable separation alerts, which will notify you if you leave your AirPods behind.

To use the Find My app, make sure your AirPods are connected to your device and open the Find My app. Tap on Devices and select your AirPods from the list. You can then see their location on the map, or tap on Play Sound to make them beep. You can also tap on Directions to get turn-by-turn navigation to your AirPods.

To enable separation alerts, go to Settings > Find My > Notifications and toggle on Notify When Left Behind. You can also customize when and where you want to receive these alerts.

Taking the Ear Tip Fit Test

If you have AirPods Pro, you can take the ear tip fit test to make sure you're using the right size of ear tips for your ears. The ear tip fit test uses the microphones in your AirPods Pro to measure the sound level in your ear and compare it to what's coming from the speaker driver. This way, it can tell you if the ear tips are creating a good seal or not.

To take the ear tip fit test, go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad and tap on the "i" icon next to your AirPods Pro name. Then tap on Ear Tip Fit Test and follow the instructions. The test will play some music and analyze the sound in each ear. It will then show you the results for each ear and suggest a different size of...
