What makes popcorn pop?

When popcorn is heated, the moisture inside the kernel turns into steam, creating pressure inside the kernel. As the pressure continues to build, it eventually exceeds the strength of the kernel and causes it to rupture, letting out a burst of hot, fluffy popcorn!
