CIOB And Its Membership Grades

The Institute has a Royal Charter for the promotion of the science and practice of building and construction. It is for the benefit of society, and the Institute has been doing that since 1834.

Membership grades:

CIOB has membership grades from those with tremendous experience in the industry to those beginning as a student. It offers a range of Chartered and Specialist grades to support its members on every step of their career journey. Let’s know the membership grades it provides:

Fellow (FCIOB):

The Fellowship is the highest award that CIOB offers. The Institute’s Fellows are amongst the most knowledgeable and experienced professionals in the industry of construction. These members have global recognition for their attainments and skills throughout their careers. Apart from that, the related post-nominal letters, FCIOB, come with huger respect and are in high demand. Entry to this grade is focused on fulfilling a unique set of leadership competencies and behaviours at a strategic level. It reflects the highest professional competency level.

FCIOB grade is benchmarked at level 7 by ENIC, and equivalent to a Master’s degree level. Fellowship applications are open to senior professionals having more than five years of experience in leading an organization. Besides that, they need experience in leading people and contributing to the industry, society or/and communities.

Besides getting the benefits of Chartered Membership, being a CIOB Fellow can come with huge additional rewards. These can include employment achievement recognition, promotion, career progression, higher salaries and countless job opportunities.

When retiring, the holder of this grade can apply for the Retired Grade. On acceptance, they can use new designations Ret FCIOB.

The Chartered Membership status comes with many benefits, including the right to use MCIOB as a post-nominal designation. Attaining this status will allow you to choose between the descriptor of Chartered Construction Manager and Chartered Builder. In addition, you will have the right to vote and apply to become a Trustee. This will allow you to actively take part in the management of the CIOB.

The other benefits a Chartered Member can enjoy are access to:

Professional Review: The final stage to attaining the MCIOB grade for most candidates is the CIOB Professional Review. It assesses whether the candidate has the right skills, knowledge and experience in the three main areas of competence. These areas are management, occupational and professionalism. When a candidate passes this assessment, they become a Chartered Member and can use the designation MCIOB.

Technical Member (TechCIOB):

The Technical Member status (TechCIOB) is a specialist award that CIOB offers. This status is to empower specialists to promote their achievements through a globally recognized certification and post-nominal letters.

The Applicant grade is an entry for those who don’t have an existing ACIOB/ICIOB membership and want to become Chartered. It is a non-chartered grade. You have to meet the eligibility requirements and attain this grade for your next steps to becoming Chartered.

This grade doesn’t come with any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations. However, by making progress through the most appropriate pathway to membership, you can attain Chartership. After that, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits that come with being MCIOB.
