Member (MCIOB):

The Chartered Membership grade comes with many benefits. These benefits also include the right to use MCIOB as a post-nominal designation.

You will have a choice to choose between the descriptor of Chartered Construction Manager and Chartered Builder. Being a Chartered Member will allow you to vote and apply to become a Trustee. This way, you will be able to take part in the management of the CIOB.

Note: The last stage to attaining Chartered Membership for most candidates is the CIOB Professional Review. It evaluates that you have the required skills, knowledge and experience in the three main areas of competence. These three areas are management, occupational and professionalism. When passing your assignment, you will become a CIOB Chartered Member, allowing you to use the post-nominal letters MCIOB.

Fellow (FCIOB):

The Fellowship is the highest award, CIOB offers. Its fellow is amongst the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals in the construction industry. Those with the FCIOB status have global recognition for their skills and attainments throughout their careers. Besides that, the desire for the FCIOB post-nominal letters is always at its peak.

Technical Member (TechCIOB):

The Technical Member status (TechCIOB) is a specialist award that CIOB offers. This designation was designed to empower specialists to promote their attainments via an internationally-recognized certification and post-nominal letters.

Entry to become a Technical Member is focused on fulfilling a unique set of competencies and behaviours. They reflect the highest level of technical excellence. Aside from that, Technical Members get access to CIOB’s many benefits, including networking, CPD and so on.

Applicant:

‘Applicant’ is a non-chartered grade. It is an entry for those without an existing ACIOB/ICIOB membership but who desire to become Chartered. You have to fulfill the eligibility requirements and be admitted to this grade. After that, you will be able to take up your next steps to becoming Chartered.

The Applicant status doesn’t provide entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations. However, by progressing through the most appropriate way to membership, you can gain your Chartered Membership. Thus, you will be able to have all the benefits coming with being MCIOB.

Student:

Student membership is an entry stage for membership for those ones who are studying with the CIOB or in education. This grade doesn’t come with any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations.

However, by progressing through the most appropriate way to membership, you can attain Chartered Membership. After that, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits coming with being MCIOB.

Student membership will provide you with instant access to many resources. These resources will support your transition to a respectable career.

Discontinued grades:

The Associate (ACIOB) and Incorporated (ICIOB) are no longer available for new members. In fact, these two grades were closed in 2015. These grades were like stepping stones leading to Chartered status.

For present ACIOB and ICIOB members, the status will not change until June 2025. At this point, CIOB expects that the holder would have upgraded to Chartered status.

Associate membership was for those in a management position for some years with an academic qualification. The qualification was equivalent to an HNC or other Level 4 qualification.

The Incorporate status was one step above Associate. It was for fairly experienced engineers with the equivalent of a foundation degree, HND or Level 5 qualification.
