MCIOB, which stands for CIOB’s Chartered Membership is equal to a Bachelor’s Degree. On the other hand, FCIOB, which stands for CIOB Chartered Fellowship is equal to a Master’s Degree.

As a CIOB Chartered member, you will become a part of the world’s largest and most influential professional organization. This organization for construction management and leadership has more than 50,000 members in over 100 countries.

How to attain a Chartership:

The following are the steps to becoming a Chartered member:

  1. Check your eligibility:

For membership, CIOB takes into account many factors like professional experience and education. Besides that, it also considers membership with other professional bodies and the like.

If you don’t currently fulfill the eligibility requirements for Chartered Membership or Fellowship, you can have a tailored pathway. This pathway can help you reach your full potential and make career opportunities available to you.

  1. Register online now:

First, create an account on the online portal. After that, complete the Pathway Finder and start your journey to Chartered Membership or Fellowship.

  1. Submit your application:

You have to upload an up-to-date copy of your resume and any related qualifications. When you submit the application and pay the appropriate fees, your application will be assessed and verified. All this will take less than 14 working days. First, you will join one of its Pathways and a Non-Chartered membership grade of Student or Applicant.

  1. Find the pathway to membership:

After the review of your application, CIOB will provide you with further guidance. This guidance will let you know the next steps to attain Chartered Membership or Fellowship.

If you need to take up additional study or qualifications, the authority will provide you with more information. This valuable information will help you decide the most convenient and efficient way forward.

  1. Professional Review or Fellowship Assessment:

Professional Review:

It is the last stage before attaining Chartered Membership. When it is confirmed that you are eligible for the Professional Review, start working on it. It demonstrates your skills, knowledge and experience in key areas of managerial, occupational and professional competence.

Fellowship Assessment:

If having extensive industry experience at a senior level, apply directly for CIOB’s Fellowship (FCIOB) award. It is the highest Chartered status, or you can also choose to upgrade as you make progress in your career.

You will get support and a workshop for support to develop your written Fellowship assessment and Panel review. This is the last stage before attaining Chartered Fellowship.

Why to attain Chartered Membership?

As a Chartered member, you can add MCIOB after your name. This status means that you have the skills and knowledge to complete the job to the highest standard. Thus, you will be able to grab the attention of clients and colleagues.

In addition, Chartered membership is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with global recognition.

Other membership grades:

The following are two other CIOB membership grades:

Applicant:

The grade of the Applicant is a non-chartered grade. It is an entry for those who are without an existing ACIOB/ICIOB membership and want to be Chartered. You need to fulfill the eligibility requirements and be admitted to this grade. After that, you can undertake your next steps for Chartership.

The grade of Applicant doesn’t offer any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations. However, it can provide you with a perfect pathway to attain a Chartership. In addition, it will also allow you to enjoy all the benefits of being MCIOB.

Student:

Student membership is an entry point to the membership for an individual who is studying with the CIOB or in education. This status doesn’t come with any entitlement to post-nominal letters or designations.

However, it is a very helpful way to attain Chartered Membership and get all the benefits of being MCIOB. Moreover, it comes with instant access to many resources supporting you for a valuable career.

Discontinued grades:

The Associate (ACIOB) and Incorporated (ICIOB) statuses closed in 2015 to new members. They were stepping stones towards Chartered status. For present ICIOB and ACIOB members, the status will not change until June 2025. At this time, the authority expects you to have upgraded to Chartered status.

Associate membership was for those in a management position for some years with an academic qualification. This qualification was equivalent to an HNC or other Level 4 qualification.

On the other hand, the CIOB Incorporated status was one step above the Associate status. The Incorporated credential was for fairly experienced managers with the equal of a foundation degree, HND or Level 5 qualification.
