Mojang is putting its blocky foot down in the realm of brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the company's director of creative communications has laid out new guidelines specifically directed towards ad agencies, businesses, and all other non-gamer-related entities looking to capitalize on Minecraft's vast user base.
I Don't Care About Miles Per Gallon
To give you an idea of how big the base of users is, Markus "Notch", Persson the developer of the PC version disclosed in 2014 that it had more than 100 million registered users. It's easy to see how a pool of users that large could be a lure for brands that want to market their wholly unrelated wares to the community. But no more -- as per the new guidelines for building promotion it's no longer permitted to build servers or maps to "promote unrelated products in a playable form." What does that mean? Well, you can stop wasting time on awkward promotions such as the massive, working cellphone CaptainSparklez made on behalf of Verizon or Disney creating a map of Tomorrowland to promote its film of the same name. However, when you're a massive fan and you do these kinds of things on your own dime and time, well, that's just fine by Mojang.
