The History

It was introduced there by Chhatrapati Shahu, Maharaja of Kolhapur in 1915. The elephant fighting was great entertainment for royal families and also the masses. It used to occur between two male elephants usually when they were in heat. The game sometimes used to become very gory, too. Sometimes the game used to get played between an angry elephant and a group of brave players. The players used to prick the elephant and get him more and more aggressive. The irritated animal tried to catch the players and when it tried then it used to get pricked by the other players from the opposite side. The players used to hide in the stone towers of the Sathmari ground. And if the elephant manages to catch a player anyhow the others then should make the animal leave their companion by frightening it with fireworks or arrows. There is almost no incident of an elephant killing a player in Sathmari.
