Students Encouraged to Dream at Young Leaders Day

2 min read

Live a 3D life. That's the challenge inspirational New Zealand leaders put to the full house of more than 2000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools during the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) which was held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier today.

Students were taught by Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player Laura Langman, athlete and Carabiner Mentoring Programme founder Cam Calkoen, adventurer and presenter of TV One's First Crossings series Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive of The Mind Lab Frances Valintine, and Attitude Programmes for Schools presenter Charlie Laumatia.

The NYLD events of this year challenge students to live a 3-D experience by dreaming, daring and building their leadership capabilities.

Annette Fale, manager of NYLD Annette Fale, manager of NYLD, says that the 3D life is like a movie that explodes onto the screen.

"Imagine what your future life might be like. Then chase your dream. Be brave and do the daring and terrifying things that make life interesting. Develop your strengths - there is more to you waiting to be discovered. No one gets a brilliant life without guts, vision and work," students were told.

Frances Valintine was the driving driver behind Media Design School. She founded The Mind Lab in Newmarket in 2013, a facility that provides robotics and filmmaking, electronics programming and science technology to children ranging from 4-15 years.

Frances inspired the young leaders to prepare for a changing future.

"To prepare for the future, you must to be open in your thinking - curiosity will be your greatest strength, not technology, not the way you play Minecraft, but curiosity and exploration," Frances said, as the students took notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up in the morning and think, how can I make things better and how can I improve things?"

The day was not only motivational, but also entertaining. A performance by The Laughing Samoans, interactive games and 3D video clips were among the highlights of the day.

Over 90,000 students from New Zealand have attended a National Young Leaders Day since 2001. The events are held every year in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North, Rotorua. Christchurch and Dunedin.
