Why Does The Printer No Longer Pick Up The Paper?
4 min read

If the printer is not picking up paper, the room may be too humid, or the ambient air may be too dry, causing static and non-grabbing problems. Sometimes, the paper pickup problem does not come from the sheets, their positioning, the ambient air, or the tray but simply from a defect in the paper drive rollers. If the printer is no longer taking paper, why not check that there is no object stuck inside?

Therefore, it is necessary to check for any obstruction at the mechanism level to solve paper pickup problems. Whether it is paper in the case of a paper jam, or the presence of a paper clip, staple, glue, or plastic, you should know that this type of residue can block the drive rollers or the printer's pick rollers and jam the paper pickup mechanisms.

How To Fix A Printer That No Longer Takes Paper?

In order to repair a paper picking problem with your printer, it is necessary to check the pick rollers or pick rollers to clear them of objects that may be clogging them or clean them of accumulations of dirt and dust that may cause them to slip. Block them.

To unlock the printer drive rollers and remove any object, proceed as follows:

  • Start by turning off your printer. Disconnect the power supply from the socket to avoid any accident or electric shock risk.
  • Bring a small lamp to inspect the inside of your paper input tray, a cotton swab, a cloth, and pliers to be able to grasp the object.
  • Remove the sheets of paper and empty the sheet feeder.
  • Gently open the upper paper tray by removing the receptacle or, depending on the model, the lower paper tray. You can also turn the printer upside down so that you can inspect the inside of the printer. Then go to the cleaning tray under the printer to see if it has any torn pieces of paper or stuck objects.
  • Check that the drive rollers are clear of any obstacles by using the lamp.
  • Carefully remove the stuck object with your pliers.
  • Clean the pickup rollers using a cotton swab or a cloth lightly dampened with water and let them dry for at least ten minutes.
  • Put everything back in place, close the tray, and load the sheets.
  • Run a print test to check that everything is back to normal.

To unlock the print rollers of laser printers, follow these steps:

  • Unplug your laser printer and turn it off
  • Remove the tray so you can check the location of the ink cartridges and printheads
  • Check the printer drive rollers by spinning the small cylindrical wheels
  • Clear them of residues or objects that may clog them and clean them if necessary using a cotton swab
  • Put everything back in place and print again to check

At this point, your printer should be working and detecting the paper in the tray. In the event of a paper jam, i.e., if the paper is stuck inside the printer, you will have to do something else.
