What are hook worms?

Hookworms are parasitic worms that live in the small intestine of animals and humans. They are named for their hook-like mouthparts, which they use to attach to the intestinal lining of their host and feed on their blood. In humans, hookworm infection can cause anemia, fatigue, abdominal pain, and malnutrition. The larvae of hookworms can also cause a skin condition called cutaneous larva migrans. Hookworm infection is common in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices, particularly in developing countries.
