About Por una Cabeza
Por una cabeza is a popular Argentine tango song. The music and lyrics were written in 1935 by Carlos Gardel and Alfred Le Pera, respectively. Le Pera was a Brazilian from São Paulo, which was also the birthplace of Zequinha de Abreu, the composer of Tico-Tico no Fubá. Le Pera and Gardel died on June 24, 1935 in a plane crash in Medellin, Colombia, while on tour.
The name comes from a Spanish equestrian phrase that translates to head and refers to a horse that has won a race by a head.
The song is about a gambler who bets on horse racing and compares his passion for horses to his passion for women.
This tango was performed by many orchestras and sounded in numerous films: "Delicacies" (1991), "The Scent of a Woman" (1992), "Schindler's List" (1993), "True Lies" (1994), "Titanic" (1996), "Frida" (2002), "Bad Santa" (2003), "All the King's Men" (2006), "Planet 51" (2009), in one of the episodes of the series "Crime Scene: New York" (2007), etc.
In the movie "Scent of a Woman" one of the most spectacular scenes is the tango performed by Al Pacino and Gabrielle Anwar to the tune "Por una cabeza".
The tango was arranged by John Williams. This piece performed by violinist Itzhak Perlman appeared on the album "Cinema Serenade". Perlman (solo) and Williams (conducting) also performed this tango at their concerts. In 2012, the group "Da Carrera" released a dance version with an original vocal recording by Carlos Gardel.
