Helen Chiang, Mojang's studio director, writes in a blog post that "126 million players" are now playing Minecraft each month. This is in addition to the 112 million active monthly users as of September 2019 which was reported in an interview with Helen Chiang, Business Insider and Helen Chiang. "What we find is that it's a game that players are always returning to," says Chiang. "It may not be the most popular, as there are many good games but it's one that players love to return to."

Between the traditional paid sales around the world and registered accounts for the free-to play version in China, Minecraft's reached more than 480 million players in 2019.The majority of that is due to the Chinese release, which launched in 2017 and has gained nearly 300 million players, as analyst Daniel Ahmad notes on Twitter. The paid version has been downloaded more than 180 million times around the world. The combined sales will make Minecraft the third-largest country in the world, after China and India.

There's no indication of Minecraft 2 on the horizon however, if the initial game carries on like this there's no need for one. Explore the best Minecraft mods in case you're looking for additional ways to make the game more enjoyable for yourself.
