How to avoid clutter on your iPhone home screen?
9 min read

If you're like most iPhone users, you probably have dozens of apps installed on your device, some of which you rarely or never use. As a result, your home screen can quickly become cluttered and messy, making it hard to find the apps you need or want. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to organize and declutter your iPhone home screen, and make it look more neat and tidy. Here are some tips and tricks to help you do that.

Hide home screen pages.

One of the new features introduced in iOS 14 is the ability to hide entire home screen pages that you don't need or use often. This can help you reduce the number of swipes you have to do to access your apps and also make your home screen look more minimalistic. To hide home screen pages:

  • Long-press on an empty area of your home screen until the apps start jiggling.
  • Tap on the dots at the bottom of the screen to enter the page editing mode.
  • Uncheck the pages that you want to hide, and tap Done.

You can still access the hidden pages by swiping left from the rightmost page, or by using the App Library.

Hide your apps in the App Library

Another new feature in iOS 14 is the App Library, which is a one-stop destination for all your apps. The App Library automatically categorizes your apps into folders based on their type or function, such as Social, Entertainment, Utilities, etc. You can also search for any app by name or use the alphabetical list. To access the App Library, swipe left from the last home screen page.

You can also hide individual apps from your home screen and keep them only in the App Library. This can help you free up some space and remove clutter from your home screen. To hide apps in the App Library:

  • Long-press on an app icon until a menu pops up.
  • Tap on Remove App, and then tap on Move to App Library.

You can still launch the hidden apps from the App Library or by using Spotlight search.

Keep new apps away from the home screen

If you download new apps frequently, you might end up with many icons on your home screen that you don't really need or use. To prevent this, you can change a setting that will automatically download new apps to the App Library instead of the home screen. To do this:

  • Go to Settings > Home Screen.
  • Under Newly Downloaded Apps, select App Library Only.

You can still add any app to your home screen by long-pressing on it in the App Library and tapping on Add to Home Screen.

Move apps with ease

If you want to rearrange your apps on your home screen, you don't have to move them one by one. You can actually select and move multiple apps at once, which can save you a lot of time and hassle. To do this:

  • Long-press on an app icon until it starts jiggling.
  • Drag it slightly and then tap on other apps that you want to move with it. You will see a number indicating how many apps you have selected.
  • Drag the stack of apps to wherever you want to place them, such as a different page or a folder.

Batch-delete apps with Apple Configurator

If you want to delete multiple apps at once, you can use a tool called Apple Configurator 2, which is available for free from the Mac App Store. This tool allows you to manage and configure multiple iOS devices at once, and also lets you delete multiple apps in one go. To do this:

  • Download and install Apple Configurator 2 on your Mac.
  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac with a USB cable and trust it if prompted.
  • Launch Apple Configurator 2 and select your iPhone from the list of devices.
  • Click on Actions > Modify > Remove Apps.
  • Select the apps that you want to delete and click Remove.

Delete apps directly on iPhone

If you don't have a Mac or don't want to use Apple Configurator 2, you can also delete apps directly on your iPhone. There are two ways to do this:

  • Long-press on an app icon until a menu pops up. Tap on Delete App and confirm.
  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Tap on any app that you want to delete and tap on Delete App.

Customize your iPhone dock

The dock is the fixed menu bar at the bottom of your home screen that shows four app icons. You can customize what appears in your dock by adding or removing any app that you want. You can also place a folder into your dock for easier access. To customize your dock:

  • Long-press on an empty area of your home screen until the apps start jiggling.
  • Drag any app icon to or from the dock as you wish.
  • To create a folder in the dock, drag one app icon over another in the dock and release. You can then add more apps to the folder or rename it.

Add widgets that save space and look cool

Widgets are small windows that display information or functionality from your apps without having to open them. You can add widgets to your home screen to save space and make it look more interesting. You can also use widget stacks to combine multiple widgets into one and swipe through them. To add widgets to your home screen:

  • Long-press on an empty area of your home screen until the apps start jiggling.
  • Tap on the plus sign at the top left corner of the screen.
  • Browse or search for the widgets that you want to add and tap on them.
  • Select the size and shape of the widget and tap on Add Widget.
  • Drag the widget to wherever you want to place it on your home screen.

Arrange your apps in alphabetical order

If you want a simple and easy way to organize your apps, you can arrange them in alphabetical order. This can help you find any app quickly by its name. To arrange your apps in alphabetical order:

  • Go to Settings > General > Reset.
  • Tap on Reset Home Screen Layout and confirm.
  • This will reset your home screen layout to the default one, with all your apps arranged in alphabetical order.

Use folders to group similar apps

Folders are another great way to organize your apps and reduce clutter on your home screen. You can create folders for different categories or themes, such as Games, Social, Productivity, etc. You can also rename or delete folders as you wish. To create folders on your home screen:

  • Long-press on an app icon until it starts jiggling.
  • Drag it over another app icon that you want to group with it and release. This will create a folder with both apps inside it.
  • To add more apps to the folder, drag them over the folder and release.
  • To rename the folder, tap on its name and enter a new one.
  • To delete the folder, drag all the apps out of it until it disappears.

These are some of the best ways to avoid clutter on your iPhone home screen and make it more organized and functional. Try them out and see how they work for you. And if you have any other tips or tricks for decluttering your iPhone home screen, feel free to share them in the comments below.
