Programming languages can be challenging to master, especially for kids who would rather create them than play with them. ThoughtSTEM offers an answer that makes programming fun and accessible. Its forthcoming LearnToMod software teaches you how to write JavaScript code by creating Minecraft mods that are appropriate to your skill level. You can begin by using the building blocks of code to design simple but fun features, like an archer that shoots Teleporters. Advanced students, however, can write JavaScript in raw JavaScript to create content that isn't available in Minecraft's cuboid universe. For instance, a Tetris minigame.

In case the gameplay isn't enough, there are plenty of motivators included in the system. There are more than 100 lessons with videos, badges for completing certain tasks, and private servers that let you show projects to your friends. You can even get credit at the University of California in San Diego, if you're pursuing the degree of a programmer. While only 150 students are testing LearnToMod but you can buy it at a discounted price of $30 prior to the launch in October. This is a good bargain if you're looking to get your feet on the ground.
